This week in their English 2 classes, Grade 4 students celebrated International Women’s Day. In line with the values of world citizenship and intercultural education, students read and learned about astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. Students also made connections to female Turkish aviator, Sabiha Gökcen. Additionally, students learned the word “stereotype”, thought about stereotypes of both women/girls and men/boys and discussed as a class why stereotyping groups of people is wrong. Students also learned the theme of the International Women’s Day organization for 2020: Each for Equal. We discussed why gender equality is so important and what students can do to work towards a more gender equal world in their own lives.
