This week, our 5th grade students discussed the advantages and disadvantages of living in big cities in their English 1 classes. They came up with ideas on how to protect wildlife in big cities. They shared their own experiences and emphasized the importance of nature and wildlife. To encourage intercultural education, students also learned about life in other big cities. They read a text about Kazakhstan and learned about its unique culture. They discussed the modern architecture of Astana, which has only been the new capital city of Kazakhstan for 23 years.  They learned about the design and planning that goes into a city. They were surprised to read that Astana’s entertainment center was built inside the world’s largest tent to protect people from the cold!

Our students also learned the meaning of symbols and guessed different symbols of cities from around the world. As a way to promote world citizenship, students shared their previous knowledge and talked about their experiences of visiting these touristic locations. 

After discussing different types of architecture, students also learned about the seven ancient wonders of the world. They learned about their locations, their importance and their legends. Students were impressed to see Turkey as a home to two of these seven wonders.

In order to incorporate all of their studies from this week, students will design and create their own cities over the weekend. They will share their ideas and designs with their friends in class.  They will try to convince their friends to become residents of their new cities!
