Our Grade 4 students were incorporating themes of spreading kindness and joy into our English Il lessons covering “The Boxcar Children”. For our Winter Festival, we wanted students to think of ways to show kindness and what “gifts of kindness” they could give to The Boxcar Children or those in their lives. Students were to write these ideas onto the snowman writing paper and share with the class. Along the same theme, we extended this exercise into our Art lessons so that we could “Light up the World with Kindness” and therefore “Light up the Fourth Grade with Kindness”. During their art lessons, students were to think of different ways that they could show kindness or which acts of kindness they could perform at school, then they were to write these different kind acts onto the colorful lightbulbs. The lights will be hung around our classrooms to remind everyone the importance of kindness. This activity illustrates a having respect for our school and classmates, as well as a curiosity about how to be kind and how to incorporate kindness into our lives during the New Year and year round.
